Pitcher and Grapes - Sal Gruttadauria

Sal,
There is a compelling sense of atmosphere, color harmony and depth within this piece.
The painting could be enhanced through lowering the value on the left side of the creamer to be within the same value range as the shadow that we see on the very bottom and also within the creamer, to the right. Also, if you were to merge the value of the cast shadow with the value of the bottom of the creamer, the piece would appear more naturalistic. The grapes themselves are painted beautifully … they are quite luminous in nature. However, the green within the stems of the grapes isolates. If you were to paint the steams with the neutral gray/brown, and then infuse the stem forms with a little bit of green and violet it would work better. The manner in which you have treated the negative space in the background is fabulous – there are many subtleties. These subtleties could move into both the green stems and cast shadow. Be careful in future works never to allow one color to isolate. If you use a color allow it to appear in a muted form in other areas of the painting. This leads to color harmony and a over all sense of unity.
